Lesson Plans

Gurdwaras

  • Gurdwaras are the heart of the Sikh communities. They are the places the community comes together not only for spiritual needs but also to learn new skills from elders, build social connections, discuss and debate issues important to all. Gurdwaras are the community centers that give a physical space for everyone to come together.

This lesson plan explores the meaning of Gurdwara, its role in BC’s history as well as what they look like in today’s communities.

    • What are Gurdwaras? What is their significance and why should we learn about them?

    • Why is it important for everyone to learn about Gurdwaras?

    • What role do Gurdwaras play in society?

    • Consider and reflect on the contemporary and historical significance of Gurdwaras in British Columbia, Canada.

Who is Canadian?

  • This lesson plan delves into how and who we define as Canadians. The definition of Canadian has evolved over time as we include the histories of minority groups and the stories of their challenges.

Students begin by thinking about the characteristics that are present in the ‘best’ countries in the world and where Canada falls on that. From there they explore the idea of the stories we tell ourselves and the identity we have created. The lesson will conclude with an exploration into some of the ways that Canadians have challenged the notion of an accepting, multicultural Canada

    • How does Canadian identity evolve and change to different times and circumstances?

    • How can the power of storytelling change how we view the past?

    • How is Canadian identity still changing?

Identity

  • Who are you? What makes you, you? What sets you apart from others?

Students first learn about and explore Sikhi and Sikh identity. Then, they turn to themselves and examine what makes them, them. From here, they create an identity poster that reflects on how their physical identity represents who they are.

    • How can learning about Sikhi and the 5Ks help us explore our own identity?

    • How do cultural and religious symbols help one learn who they are?
