Celebrating Sikh Heritage Month 2024
The hidden histories of Sikhs and South Asians in Vancouver
In the winter of a pandemic, a young girl stands at the corner of Howe and Cordova, watching her family bellow slogans in support of farmers halfway across the world. This is part of the farmers’ protests, a movement that took the world by storm and continues to rock the core of India’s capital.
This is not an unfamiliar sight in Vancouver. Immigrant families often live in two worlds – the old motherland from whence they came and the new home where they have been welcomed as guests. This duality has manifested itself in many ways over the decades, including on the streets of Vancouver itself.
